U.S. President Donald Trump is scheduled to attend the FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain on Sunday, July 19, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt announced on Thursday.
The championship match will be held at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, within the New York metropolitan area. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. local time. The venue is officially referred to as New York New Jersey Stadium during the tournament.
Leavitt said the president was looking forward to attending the final, describing the event as a fitting conclusion to a tournament that demonstrated the United States’ ability to host one of the world’s largest international sporting events.
Trump’s appearance is expected to add further political and media attention to a match that is already attracting a massive global audience. FIFA President Gianni Infantino is also expected to attend the event as Spain and Argentina compete for football’s most prestigious international trophy.
From an economic perspective, the final is expected to generate substantial activity across the New York–New Jersey metropolitan area. Hotels, restaurants, transport providers, retailers, and tourism-related businesses are likely to benefit from the arrival of supporters, officials, sponsors, and international media representatives.
The president’s attendance will also require heightened security measures and temporary travel restrictions around the stadium and parts of the surrounding metropolitan area. These arrangements may disrupt some private aviation and local transportation services during the weekend.
The match will conclude the first 48-team FIFA World Cup, which was jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Eleven U.S. cities served as host locations, placing the tournament at the centre of America’s international tourism, infrastructure, advertising, broadcasting, and sports-business sectors.
